Choosing a Voyage: Questions and Answers

What is the difference between a cruise and a voyage?

Nothing official. Many lines, especially luxury and expedition lines, prefer “voyage” for longer or more destination-focused trips. On this site we use both words for any trip on a ship.

What should I decide first: the region or the ship?

Usually the region and season, because they limit which ships are available. Then choose the style and size of ship that suits you within that region.

How far ahead should I book?

For popular seasons, suites, expedition voyages and world cruises, a year or more ahead gives the best choice. For flexible travelers, shorter Caribbean sailings can often be booked closer to departure.

Is a balcony cabin worth it?

It depends on the voyage. On scenic routes such as Alaska, Norway or a crossing with many sea days, a private balcony adds a lot. On a port-heavy Mediterranean itinerary you may use it less.

Which voyages are best for a first cruise?

A 3–7 night Caribbean or Bahamas sailing is the most common first cruise, because it is close to home for many Americans and easy to plan. Our sister site First Time Cruise walks through the process.

Are adults-only voyages available?

Yes. Some lines and ships are adults-only, and many luxury and river lines attract mainly adult travelers. Ask when you request a quote.

Do I need a passport?

For most international voyages, yes. Some round-trip sailings from US ports accept other proof of citizenship for US citizens, but a passport is strongly recommended in case you need to fly home from abroad. Check the cruise line’s document rules for your sailing.

Should I buy travel insurance?

It is wise for any voyage, and especially for long, remote or expensive trips such as expedition and world voyages, where medical evacuation can be very costly. Compare policies soon after you pay your deposit.

How do I choose between two similar voyages?

Compare the total cost (fare plus drinks, gratuities, flights and hotels), the number of sea days versus port days, the time spent in the ports that matter most to you, and the size and style of each ship. Small differences in itinerary often matter more than small differences in price.
